Phonologic Rehabilitation of Anomia in Aphasia
نویسنده
چکیده
This study investigated the effects of an intensive phonologic treatment for anomia in aphasia. The theoretical motivation for this investigation was based on a parallel distributed processing model of phonology (Nadeau, 2001). We proposed that if treatment were directed at the level of the phonologic processor (e.g. phonemes and phoneme sequences), opportunities for naming via a phonological route, as opposed to a strictly whole word route, would be enhanced, thereby improving naming. Ten individuals with chronic anomia and aphasia due to left hemisphere stroke served as participants. A single-subject, repeated probe design with replication across individuals was employed. The primary outcome measure was confrontation naming. Secondary outcome measures included discourse production (word count and content information units), phonologic production and nonword repetition. Data were analyzed visually and statistically. Results showed a positive treatment effect (improved phonologic production) and generalization to confrontation naming and discourse production (word count and content information units). Effects of treatment were maintained 3 months post treatment termination for confrontation naming and discourse production (content information units). The results of this study provide sufficient evidence of efficacy to encourage further research.

متن کاملComparative Effectiveness of Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA) and Phonological Components Analysis (PCA) for Anomia Treatment in Persian Speaking Patients With Aphasia
Objectives: Anomia is one of the most common and persistent symptoms of aphasia. Although treatments of anomia usually focus on semantic and/or phonological levels, which both have been demonstrated to be effective, the relationship between the underlying functional deficit in naming and response to a particular treatment approach remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the rela...
متن کاملEffects of Phonomotor Treatment on the Reading Abilities of Individuals with Aphasia and Phonological Alexia
A left hemisphere stroke often results in aphasia characterized by impaired reading (Cherney, 2004; Webb & Love, 1983) and phonological processing abilities (Blumstein, Baker, & Goodglass, 1977; den Ouden & Bastiaanse, 2005). Research has shown that treatment focused at the level of the phoneme improves reading abilities in persons with aphasia (PWA) and phonological alexia (Conway et al., 1998...

PURPOSE To extend the use of the Spanish Computer-assisted Anomia Rehabilitation Program (CARP-2) for anomia from a single case to a group of 15 people with aphasia. To evaluate whether the treatment is active (Phase 1) for this group (Robey & Schultz, 1998), providing potential explanations as to why. METHODS Fifteen participants with chronic aphasia (with a range from moderate to mild anomi...
متن کاملNeural correlates of phonological and semantic-based anomia treatment in aphasia.
Most naming treatments in aphasia either assume a phonological or semantic emphasis or a combination thereof. However, it is unclear whether semantic or phonological treatments recruit the same or different cortical areas in chronic aphasia. Employing three persons with aphasia, two of whom were non-fluent, the present study compared changes in neural recruitment associated with phonologic and ...
